AwardNL is the Dutch branch of the International Award for Young People, on behalf of the Duke of Edinburgh, or DofE. This foundation runs programs for young people in more than 130 countries. How, why and since when? We are happy to tell you.
The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award (colloquially called “the Award”) is a globally recognized program that helps young people ages 14 to 24 find their passion, place and purpose in the world. The program is inclusive and open to young people of all backgrounds, cultures and abilities.
The Award is all about personal development through non-formal teaching and learning. Young people discover their interests, develop skills and work toward their life ambitions. Since its inception in 1956, more than seven million Awards have been achieved.
The Award challenges young people to push their limits and make a difference in their communities. Each year, more than one million young people worldwide start their adventure.
The program is divided into four main components: volunteering, sports, talent and expedition. For the Gold Award, there is also an additional residential project.
DofE is short for “The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. It is synonymous with adventure, self-development and celebration of diversity. The program provides a safe and supportive environment in which young people overcome obstacles and challenge themselves. Whether you enjoy sports, being creative, or want to contribute to your community, the DofE offers a path that is right for you.
The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award was founded in 1956 by HRH Prince Philip and German educator Kurt Hahn. The program began as a pilot project for boys in the United Kingdom, designed to help them develop their self-confidence and skills in the transition to adulthood.
What began with 7,000 participants grew into a global phenomenon supporting young people in more than 130 countries. The core values - inclusion, personal growth and discovering your potential - still drive the success of the Award today.
